This is US 281 and Loop 1604 today - two major roadways that require you to exit - stop at a traffic light - and then enter the other highway. And it's been this way for over 20 years. This intersection has ranked as the most accident prone intersection in San Antonio and Bexar County for a number of years, with over hundreds of accidents happening here because of the stop and go traffic, and the sheer volume of cars trying to either get onto US 281 or onto Loop 1604 at this one spot.
For years our community has tried to find a way to fix this problem, to provide relief from not only the accidents but also the congestion, and the endless amounts of time wasted idling in traffic with so many cars trying to turn, to get home, to get to work, or just trying to enjoy some of the beauty that is our community.
Well, relief is coming for this area - in the form of the four non-toll direct connectors linking US 281 and Loop 1604 at this intersection, providing relief for the highest traffic movements, and bringing a new route for approximately 50,000 cars a day once constructed.
As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), also known as the Federal Stimulus program, the Alamo RMA has received $140 Million in funding to construct four non-toll direct connectors between US 281 and Loop 1604 on the north side of San Antonio.
In April 2010, the Alamo RMA Board of Directors awarded Williams Brothers Construction Company the Design / Build contract to design and construct the four non-toll southern direct connectors between US 281 and Loop 1604.
Part of this project will feature the construction of a left hand exit from US 281 North (as shown in the photo to the left) to Loop 1604 East and West.
As construction moves forward - check back on this page for more updates - and if you are curious as to how the new interchange connectors will impact your drive - check out our video clips showing how these new connectors will work - to save you time, money, and give you back the freedom of movement in North San Antonio!
